Structure of the Tsushima Current in the southwestern Japan Sea   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
We discuss the structure of the Tsushima Current in the southwestern Japan Sea using ADCP data, which are taken by the quadrireciprocal method (Katoh, 1988) for removing tidal currents, and previous temperature data. The first, second and third branches described in the triple-branch view are recognized in three observational periods: June and August 1988 and in June 1989. The first branch basically flows eastward along the 100 m isobath. Its velocity is mostly 0.5–1.0 kt (26–51 cm s–1) and 0.4–0.6 kt (21–31 cm s–1) in the Eastern Channel of the Tsushima Strait and off the San'in Coast, respectively. In waters north of Mishima, however, a part of the first branch happens to flow northeastward, without turning clockwise along the 100 m isobath. In waters northwest of Izumo, the remainder of the first branch tends to join the second one. The second branch, which has velocities of 0.5–0.8 kt (26–41 cm s–1) in general, flows eastward along a bunch of crowded isotherms at 100 m depth. The observational results clearly illustrate the changeability of the second branch. The maximum velocity of the third branch must be larger than those of the other two branches. The Tsushima Current after leaving the Western Channel is very changeable spatially and temporally, probably because the bifurcation occurs intermittently or transiently resulting from the fluctuation of inflow through the Western Channel and from that of spread of the cold water. The bifurcation into the second and third branches becomes often obscure north of Hamada owing to confluences, even though it is recognized near the Western Channel.  相似文献

We discussed the short-term fluctuations of the Tsushima Current, using ADCP (acoustic Doppler current profiler) data taken by the quadrireciprocal method (Katoh, 1988) for removing tidal currents from observed currents. Transects were set in waters northwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture to capture the first and second branches of the Tsushima Current. Along the transects, ADCP and STD (salinitytemperature-depth recorder) measurements were repeated in May to July 1989. The velocity of the first branch fluctuated considerably in a short period, while the direction and position of its axis were steadly. The stability of its axis position probably results from the topographic effect. The baroclinic transport, which is based on calculations of geostrophic current with assuming zero velocity near the bottom, of the first branch was almost equal to the barotropic one. The range of fluctuation in the barotropic transport was much larger than that in the baroclinic transport. The barotropic fluctuation was correlated with the difference in atmospheric pressure between the east and west sides of the Tsushima Strait. As for the second branch, not only the velocity but also the position of its axis changed noticeably in a short period. There was such a case where the axis was hardly recognized. The changeability of the axis position for the second branch seems to result from that of the cold water front. The baroclinic transport of the second branch was much larger than the barotropic one, but the ranges of their fluctuations were very similar with each other.  相似文献

This paper gives the results of determination of cadmium, lead and copper in interstitial water of the coastal sediment, Seto Inland Sea, Japan by using anodic stripping voltammetry. An aliquot of 4–5 ml interstitial water separated from 30–70 ml of sediment is used for the simultaneous determination of ionic cadmium, lead and copper. No significant differences were observed on the content of trace metals between surface water and interstitial water of the top of the sediment.  相似文献

The Japanese Pacific walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) stock is the largest stock of this species in Japanese waters. It is a key component of the Oyashio ecosystem. In southern Hokkaido waters, these fish spawn mainly during January and February near the mouth of Funka Bay (FB), and most eggs and larvae are transported into FB. During midsummer juvenile pollock migrate along the southern coast of Hokkaido to a nursery ground on the continental shelf off eastern Hokkaido (Doto area). However, some eggs and larvae are transported southward to the Tohoku region (TR). Transport depends largely on the Oyashio, which generally flows southward along the eastern coasts of Hokkaido and Tohoku. Thus, this stock has two different recruitment routes: FB–Doto and FB–TR. In the 1980s, when the southward flow of the Oyashio was strong, the number of age-2 pollock estimated from a virtual population analysis (VPA) indicated that recruitment to the entire stock remained at a medium level. In the 1990s, when the Oyashio weakened, strong year-classes occurred in 1991, 1994, and 1995, but not in the latter half of the 1990s. Juvenile catches in the TR by commercial fisheries, which can be taken as indices of recruitment level via FB–TR, were high during the 1980s and decreased in the 1990s. Although there was no significant difference in the average number of recruits between the 1980s and the 1990s as estimated from a VPA, the recruitment patterns differed between the two decades. Here, we propose that recruitment routes of this stock shifted in response to environmental changes.  相似文献

Temporal variations in sediment carbon content were tracked by sampling every 2 weeks for 6 to 33 months at 6 tidal flat stations with different carbon content levels (0.05–1.64%) in a single estuary. Three temporal series of current velocity at 5 cm above the sediment were also obtained. Non-cohesive and cohesive sediment stations differed in patterns of temporal variation in sediment carbon content, suggesting the difference in processes controlling sediment carbon content. In the stations of non-cohesive sandy sediment with relatively low carbon content (0.05–0.15%), sediment carbon content fluctuated within ranges specific to each station. In these stations, current velocity data suggested that frequency of sand resuspension washing out sediment carbon controls sediment carbon content level. In the stations of cohesive sediment with relatively high carbon content (0.77–1.64%), sediment carbon contents showed some unusual upward and downward peaks, recovered to usual levels specific to the stations, and was always kept higher than that in the non-cohesive sediment stations. We speculate that in the cohesive sediment stations, sand inputs may significantly control processes establishing the consolidated sediments with various carbon content levels. Spatial transitions from non-cohesive to cohesive sediments and from low to high sediment carbon contents likely occur as sand resuspension at spring tides become more irregular and less frequent. Based on these results, conceptual models describing physical processes controlling sediment carbon content at the studied stations were proposed.  相似文献

A numerical ecosystem model expressing both phosphorus and nitrogen cyclings in the pelagic system of Hiroshima Bay, Japan, was developed in order to investigate the seasonal variations of these elements and their annual budgets. Based on the geophysical and chemical structures of the bay, Hiroshima Bay was divided into northern and southern boxes, themselves divided into two layers of an upper 5 m and a lower layer according to the stratification of the water column. The model consists of equations representing all relevant physical and biological processes. The results revealed that the internal regeneration of materials was an important source of bioavailable nutrients for phytoplankton growth in the water column. The incorporation of phytoplankton aggregation improved the accuracy of the outputs in comparison to the observed data, especially during the stratified summer season. The results also indicated that phosphorus limitation of phytoplankton growth occurs in the upper layer during summer while light limitation occurs in the lower layer. In addition, physical processes such as diffusion and advection were also important as they ensured that most of regenerated nutrients in the lower layer were transported to the upper layer. Thus, these processes might support the high primary production and the production of oysters that are extensively cultured in this bay. Considering the informative results obtained, the model used in this study provides a sound basis and tool to describe the dynamics of phosphorus and nitrogen cyclings in Hiroshima Bay.  相似文献

We determined the range of the tidal variations in nutrient flux across the sediment–water interface and elucidated mechanisms of the flux variation in two estuarine intertidal flats (one sand, one mud) in northeastern Japan. Nutrient flux was measured using in situ light and dark chambers, which were incubated for 2 h, 2–6 times per day. Results showed that nutrient concentration in overlying water varied by tide and was also affected by sewage-treated water inflow. The nutrient fluxes responded quickly to the tidal variation in overlying water chemistry and the range of the variation in flux was as large as the seasonal-scale variation reported in previous studies. In the sand flat, salinity increase likely enhanced benthos respiration and led to increases in both O2 consumption and PO43− regeneration under low illumination, while benthic microalgae were likely to actively generate O2, uptake PO43− and suppress PO43− release under high illumination (>900 μmol photons m−2 s−1). Also in the mud flat, PO43− flux was related with O2 flux, although the range of temporal variation in PO43− flux was small. In both the flats, NH4+ flux was always governed by NH4+ concentration in the overlying water; either an increase in NH4+ uptake or a decrease in NH4+ release was observed as the NH4+ concentration rose due to inflow of river water or input of sewage-treated water. Although NO3 tended to be released in both tidal flats when low NO3 concentration seawater dominated, their relationship was likely to be weakened under conditions of low oxygen consumption and suppressed denitrification. It is likely that tidal variation in nutrient flux is governed more by the nutrient concentration than other factors, such as benthic biological processes, particularly in the case where nutrient concentration in the overlying water is relatively high and with wide amplitude.  相似文献

The atmosphere-ocean exchange of climatically important gases is determined by the transfer velocity (k) and concentration gradient across the interface. Based on observations in the northwestern subarctic Pacific and Sagami Bay, we report here the results of the first ever application of the natural abundance of triple isotopes of dissolved oxygen (16O, 17O and 18O) for direct estimation of k and propose a new relationship with wind speed. The k values estimated from nighttime variations in oxygen isotopes are found to be higher than the direct estimations at low wind speed (<5 m s−1) and lower at high wind speeds (>13 m s−1) and showed significant spatial variability. The method presented here can be used to derive seasonal and spatial variations in k and the influence of surface conditions on the value, leading to improved estimates of biogenic/anthropogenic gas exchange at the air-sea interface.  相似文献
